Coronavirus scare led to a major fight in a housing society at Chembur, Mumbai because one of the residents allegedly circulated a video of a student from Nagaland, suspecting her to be Chinese. The 23-year-old woman was wearing a black mask and had just returned from Nagaland to visit her friend who stays at the housing society on February 10.
While she was ringing her friend’s door at around 8.30 pm, she noticed that her friend’s neighbor was taking her recording while trying to strike a conversation with her.
At approximately 8:57 pm, the host who resides in the building receives a video from her Kerela based owner, questioning her about the video. The host who also is from Nagaland is a student studying at Tata Institute of Social Sciences. “I was shocked to see the video, where my friend, who had just arrived from the airport, was being filmed by my neighbor. When I confronted him, it led to a major argument. His wife even asked my friend to leave the building” she said, “He claimed that he assumed my friend to be Chinese and since she was wearing a mask, he thought she was infected with the coronavirus” the TISS student said, when she mentioned that this is ‘racial discrimination’ the argument escalated.
Her friend decided to leave and stay at another acquaintances place however the TISS student intends to raise a formal complaint with the institute’s North East Students’ forum.
