Mumbai, 08 Nov: The lantern market located in the heart of Dadar, Mumbai, famously known as Kandil Galli, a vibrant lantern market that comes alive during the festive seasons of Diwali and Eid and showing lights 24/7.
The origins of Kandil Galli can be traced back to the 19th century when Muslim artisans settled in the area and began crafting exquisite lanterns for the Muslim festival of Eid. Over time, the market expanded to cater to the Hindu festival of Diwali as well, becoming a symbol of unity and cultural harmony.
As I stepped into Kandil Galli, I was immediately greeted by a dazzling spectacle of lanterns. The air is filled with the sweet aroma of incense and the fragrance of street food, creating an atmosphere that is both festive and welcoming.
This year, there are over 200 stalls selling a variety of lanterns, including traditional paper lanterns, electric lanterns, and decorative lanterns. Prices for lanterns range from Rs. 50 to Rs. 5,000.
The heart and soul of Kandil Galli are the lantern sellers, who have been carrying on the legacy for generations. With their skilled hands and creative minds, they transform simple materials into works of art. Their passion and dedication are evident in every lantern they create, each piece a unique expression of their cultural heritage.
In the middle of exploring had a speak with one of the lantern sellers, Abdul. He shared decades of experience in this lantern-making, a tradition that has been passed down for over a century. He spoke with pride about the craftsmanship involved in creating each lantern and the joy he derives from seeing the faces of his customers light up when they find the perfect lantern.
The magic of Kandil Galli extends beyond the lanterns themselves. It is also about the people who come to experience its unique charm. I spoke with several visitors, each with their own reason for being there. Some were looking for the perfect lantern to decorate their homes for Diwali while others were simply drawn to the festive atmosphere. There are street photographers also to witness the lights.
Kandil Galli is more than just a lantern market; it is an experience that captures the essence of Mumbai’s vibrant culture and the warmth of its people. It is a place where tradition meets modernity, where the past illuminates the present, and where the spirit of celebration shines brightly.
