Stories packed in cloth bags: A glimpse into the lives that reach the courts

A young boy in his uniform with his parent, people perched on the stairs with their heads resting on the railing, police constables shushing the chatters on the corridors, case numbers being called out, lawyers requesting date extensions from their lordships. These scenes offer a glimpse into the everyday rhythm of the Esplanade Court in Churchgate.

The one element you can’t miss are the files wrapped in cloth bags at different corners of every courtroom. With layers of dust settled on top, these bags contain stories that has affected lives in some way. They contain pending cases, sometimes forgotten, spanning decades carrying a fatigue of delay in resolution, a setback in justice.

Cases ranging from cybercrimes to drug possession arrive at this court adding to the growing stack of FIRs, evidences, witness statements and more. The cloth bags keep piling up each passing day with papers turning into fossils than mere files.

The movements, chaos and corridors of the Esplanade Court, a retro edifice in its visual sense, are fast paced but these stacked- up bags remain the constant; they may seem as a sign of frustration for some but they also serve as a symbol of hope for many. They serve as answers to questions still lingering, issues still unsettled.
