Mumbai’s thriving arts and culture scene boasts a unique institution in the Sarmaya Art Foundation, a museum founded in 2015 by Paul Abraham, former COO of IndusInd Bank. Located first in Dadar, the institution has now moved to its new location at Kala Ghoda since last September.
In the five months since then, Sarmaya has mounted a successful first exhibition which has just closed down after two months. It is now in the process of planning and mounting its second such event as part of its yearly calendar.
Abraham (65) is a passionate art patron who has amassed a remarkable collection of 1,500 artifacts. His diverse assemblage includes ancient sculptures, rare manuscripts, antique coins, historical maps, miniature paintings, and rare books. Beyond preserving history, Sarmaya integrates modern and contemporary art, offering visitors an engaging blend of the past and present.

The museum was at first purely digital, offering the public an interesting peek into the artefacts via its website. Then it relocated and has been attracting steadily growing footfalls.
Unlike traditional museums with static displays, Sarmaya hosts themed exhibitions every two months, ensuring fresh experiences for visitors. Each exhibition is meticulously curated, providing an immersive journey through history, culture, and artistic evolution. The museum’s collection features centuries-old paintings that trace artistic progression, rare coins that shed light on ancient civilizations, and manuscripts that serve as invaluable resources for researchers and historians. This extensive collection cements Sarmaya’s position as a vital cultural and educational hub.
The upcoming exhibition at Sarmaya will explore the beauty of flora and fauna through a botanical theme. Visitors can expect a captivating showcase of botanical paintings, illustrations, and sculptures that highlight nature’s profound influence on art. Botanical art has historically played a crucial role in documenting plant species and biodiversity, making this exhibition both visually enchanting and educationally enriching. The exhibition aims to bridge the connection between art and nature, offering insight into how flora and fauna have inspired artistic expression through the ages.
With its rotating exhibitions and a collection that bridges past and present, it remains a must-visit destination for art lovers, history buffs, and scholars in Mumbai. As it evolves with every exhibition, Sarmaya stands as a testament to the timeless power of art and heritage. By fostering appreciation for diverse artistic traditions and historical artifacts, it contributes to the cultural fabric of Mumbai and beyond. Visitors can look forward to an ever-evolving artistic journey that merges tradition with innovation, keeping the spirit of discovery alive in the city’s dynamic art scene.
