No casualties reported; several important documents damaged.
Thousands of people were evacuated as a massive fire broke out in GST Bhavan at Mazgaon in Mumbai’s Byculla East on Monday at around 12.35 pm. An in-depth inquiry has been ordered by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. No casualties were reported in the incident.
The fire broke out on the 9th floor of GST Bhavan. The blaze reached to a level 4 (major) by 1:16 pm. In order to control the fire, 16 fire engines, two turntable ladders, and 9 jumbo engines were deployed. The fire finally was bought into control at around 3.30 pm, however, fire brigade officials said they are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire.
Important documents belonging to the audit section of the Goods & Services department & files of the appellate department, which handles recovery and payment disputes were damaged, however since the documents were digitized, there would not be any major impact on any proceedings besides delays in a few disputed matters, an official said. A structural audit of the govt-owned building will be carried out.
